On average, it takes me six hours a week searching job ads and researching new publications to pitch. That’s valuable time that could have been spent for writing, research or just taking a break. During these ‘marketing’ hours, I came across a web service called Contena. If you’re a pro writer wondering if there’s a way to cut down your marketing efforts in half, then read on.
When I was just starting out as a freelance writer, I spent hours on end scouring job boards, researching publications to pitch and learning the basics of freelance writing.
These days, client work has taken over and I don’t have as much time for marketing as before. While this lets me focus on writing, it also means that I might be letting great opportunities slip away.
This is where services like Contena can be your best ally.
What is Contena?
Contena is a website for freelance writers who want to find the best clients. It has several features to help writers land high-paying writing jobs.
Contena Scout is an organized job board with quality writing gigs. Writers can apply for jobs directly from the job board. Additional information like job type (Contract/Agency), quality (rate per word) and date added is also immediately visible.
Contena also has a learning suite called Contena Academy, where you can take online courses about freelance writing. It has 7 modules at the time of this writing:
- Your Writing Business
- Writing Samples
- Building a Great Portfolio
- Crafting the Perfect Pitch
- Landing the Best Clients
- The Cient Funnel
If you’re looking for new publications to pitch, skip Google and use Contena’s updated directory of publications open for submissions.
You get a summary of what the publication wants, the pay rate and a link to submit your pitch. Of course, you might want to do your own research of the publication outside the Contena website to learn more.
My favorite feature is Contena Alerts. You pick the kinds of writing jobs you want to get notified for, then it gets sent to your inbox. No need to constantly check the job board!
I used to do this automation with IFTTT, but it was a complicated and unreliable method. This nifty Alerts feature definitely does it better.
Want to know if you’re getting paid what you’re worth? Use Contena Rates to see how much companies pay for certain topics. Also, this is a great tool if you want to know how much specific publications pay their writers. This handy tool helps you find the highest rates and make your best pitch.
Lastly, if you sign up for a Platinum membership, you get a personal coach to help you with your writing journey. Contena Coaches can review your pitches and portfolio and provide feedback for improving your work.
When you see a job on the job board, you have two links: Apply for job and Contact coach. The Contact coach button increases your chances of getting hired by letting the coach screen and “fine-tune” your application.
How much does it cost?
Contena offers two memberships: Gold and Platinum. Both memberships give you access to Contena Scout, Contena Academy, Contena Submissions, Contena Rates and Contena Alerts. The Platinum membership adds a dedicated coach and portfolio review.
Gold plans can be paid in full for $497/year, or five installments of $129/month. Platinum plans cost $795 full payment for a year, or five installments of $199/month.
If you’re not sure if you want to spend this much money on a service, you can opt for a monthly plan and try it out. There’s a 30-day money-back guarantee if you feel that Contena is not for you — which, in my opinion, is most unlikely.
Is Contena For You?
The short answer is “yes”. I think Contena is a superb tool for any freelance writer, no matter where they are in their career. On the other hand, it’s also useful to new writers who want to accelerate their progress and stop wasting precious time.
I also think it’s a big help to established writers for getting new writing projects in a short amount of time. See the theme here? The advantage using this service is getting excellent results for a minimal amount of time. No more checking multiple job boards, emailing pitches that get ignored or taking on low-paying jobs.
What I like about Contena is it not only provides you with jobs you can apply for, but it also teaches you valuable freelance writing skills through its Academy feature. Any writer can apply for a job they think they’re qualified for, but if they don’t know how to write a stellar email application, then their chances of getting hired are not that high.
Contena is a great tool not just for job-hunting, but for becoming a better writer.
The cost for signing up may be high, but in the long run, it will pay you back a hundred-fold. Getting the best clients is worth every penny you spend with a Contena Gold or Platinum account.
