When buying a new laptop, most users carefully study the available models and features of each version. Time passes, however, and this information is lost - for lack of use. There is no need to know the model name of the laptop unless you have to

upgrade the machine;
install the drivers for the motherboard or other parts of the PC;
solve any other issues that require an exact notebook model,
buy used equipment directly from the former owner (you should not trust the seller in this case).

Finding out the model of a PC, laptop as well, is not difficult. You do not need any additional software to get the basic information; the built-in Windows features are sufficient. In the tutorial we shall consider Windows 10 but the steps are also relevant for older OS builds.

Laptop information available through Windows

If the sticker is burned out, erased, peeling off there are some alternative ways to know the model of your laptop. This applies to Lenovo, Acer, HP or any other manufacturer.

One method is to retrieve information about the machine using the built-in Windows system utilities. To do this:

Hit the Win+R keys simultaneously.
In the "Run" window enter the command "msinfo32" (without the quotes) and hit Enter.
In the window displayed you will find the root "System Information" (the one you really need).
Look at the items "Model", "Manufacturer" and "System SKU".

The described way of the model identification works for all the Windows operating system versions.

Note. In some cases only the motherboard and manufacturer information will be available instead of the exact model name.

Documents or a sticker on the chassis

The easiest way to know the model of your notebook without any additional software is to consult the documentation of the device. They list the manufacturer, the year of manufacture and the full model name. If you do not have the documentation, you may find the data on a special sticker. To do this:

Carefully examine the notebook.
find the sticker located on the notebook (one or more).
Check the information and find out the model.

In general the manufacturer affixes all the necessary data on the notebook casing but the sticker is often located on the cover too, therefore pay attention.

Getting information of the PC through DirectX

The DirectX diagnostic tool is another component that allows to find out the model of the notebook, the version of the drivers installed, the model of the graphical subsystem, the video adapter etc..

Get the system information you need in just a couple of minutes. To do this follow the instructions:

Hit Win+R and bring up the "Run" window.
Enter the command "dxdiag" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
In the window that appears, enter the line with the manufacturer and the model of the device (the tab opened by default).

CMD command line and Windows console utilities

If you have been unable to determine the model of the notebook through the utilities dxdiag or msinfo32 then use the command line.

Users not only get the complete make of a notebook, but also manage it and set the necessary settings. There are two basic commands available and each one provides complete information about the device, they are Systeminfo and Wmic.

How to use them to output the desired information about the laptop:

Open the command line by typing "CMD" in the search box.
This command is executed as Windows Administrator.
Enter systeminfo and press Enter.
The details of the Windows operating system and the notebook in general (device model, processor, manufacturer etc.) are displayed.
Enter the command Wmic csproduct get name
The console displays the modification of the notebook without further information on the manufacturer.

The first command is the more informative one but if your only aim is to find out the official model of your notebook you may use both methods.

Programs to obtain the configuration of a PC

There are numerous programs developed for owners of Windows-based Control Panel and notebooks. They are useful not only to get comprehensive information about your notebook, its components but also for further diagnosis.

AIDA64 (ex-Everest)

AIDA 64 gives complete information about the PC-machine and its components, including the model name. The utility is currently paid, but there is a free trial period of 30 days. In addition, there is a portable version that does not require installation.

Functions of AIDA64 will not be limited in the demo mode, so you can check laptop information through it. How to do it:

Download the latest version of AIDA64 from the link.
Install it and start it.
Go to the Totals section using the left navigation bar.
In the sections "Computer" and "System Board" you will find the complete information about the model of your notebook.

Find out the notebook specifications through the BIOS

By entering the BIOS you can access all the laptop information, including the full model name.

To enter the BIOS and obtain the notebook data:

Power off/back on the laptop or reboot the system.
Before the logo appears on the screen press the key to enter the BIOS. This key differs from manufacturer to manufacturer. Delete, F1, F2, Esc are the most common choices. Additionally some companies use a combination of 2 or 3 keys.
After the BIOS has booted up you find the information you need. This is normally displayed on the BIOS start screen, i.e. there is no need to navigate anywhere.

Please note! Some Lenovo notebooks have a dedicated BIOS access button on the casing, which has to be pressed while the system is switched off.

Some HP Notebooks models do not have the model recognized by any of the listed methods. If you have lost the documentation you can go to the manufacturer's official website and search for drivers. In this case, the "Identify the model of the device" command will be available.
